SLECA 2015 Officer of the Year
Officer Justin Smith
Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Office of Agricultural Law Enforcement
Officer Smith began his career with the Office of Agricultural Law Enforcement in 2014. Last year, he conducted over 2800 visual inspections resulting in 110 administrative violations and conducted 139 traffic stops resulting in 111 written warnings and 57 uniform traffic citations being issued. In July, he conducted a stop in which he discovered the driver was a convicted felon in possession of 12 firearms, over 5,000 rounds of ammunition, and a felony amount of cannabis. Officer Smith also interacts with the residents and visitors to the state in a public service capacity as was demonstrated with his 57 motorist assists.
Officer Smith not only performs well on duty but is active in the community while off duty as well. Officer Smith contributed greatly in providing Christmas gifts to an underprivileged family of five, and he was selected as one of the officers to carry the torch on the 5 mile, final leg of the “Special Olympics Torch Run” held in Orlando. His work ethic and high moral character has set the bar high for others to follow, and he has fast become the “go-to” officer when a job needs to be done right and without hesitation. Officer Smith goes above and beyond both on and off duty to serve the people of Florida.
