SLECA 2014 Officer of the Year
Corporal Martin Hernandez
Florida Highway Patrol
Corporal Hernandez is always looking beyond the traffic stop and watching for behavior consistent with illegal activity. Throughout the year, Corporal Hernandez made numerous seizures of contraband from traffic stops. In one example specifically, Corporal Hernandez smelled the odor of marijuana coming from a car he had stopped. In the car, he found a large cache of items which led him to notify the Secret Service. It was determined the subject in the car and his accomplice were part of an active Secret Service investigation and were responsible for 2.4 million dollars of loss to the Wells Fargo Bank of Atlanta.
Corporal Hernandez’ career with the Florida Highway Patrol began in 1998 and he has been assigned to the Contraband Interdiction Unit since 2012. He also serves as an instructor in firearms, defensive tactics, mobile field force, special response team, and as a general instructor. In addition to his efforts as a public servant, he also volunteers with the Humane Society.
